Summary of My Role
I led the playtesting of a pre-release team-based FPS game from a Chinese studio, organizing and executing two 12-player in-person sessions during late 2021. The game featured an innovative 6v6 format where one player per team had a bird's-eye commander view with special abilities, making both the gameplay and testing setup uniquely challenging.
Research Objectives:
Evaluating Commander Mechanics Understand how Western players respond to the unique commander role and its strategic impact on team gameplay.
Assessing Character Value Evaluate player engagement with character designs and abilities, with particular focus on how players perceive the rarity and value of collectible items.
Quality Perception Gather feedback on overall gameplay appeal and identify factors that contribute to a high-quality game experience for Western audiences.
Research Activities
- Environment Setup Created an improvised testing environment with 12 gaming PCs and multiple streaming setups for both local and remote observation.
- Test Sessions (3 hours each) Conducted two 12-player sessions where each player rotated through different roles, including the commander position.
- Multi-Stream Management Managed simultaneous streams to private YouTube channel for remote stakeholders and local feeds for in-building clients.
- Data Collection Gathered qualitative feedback, survey responses, and observational data throughout each session.
Project Challenges:
Challenge 1: Creating a Professional Testing Environment With Health Safety Protocols
